Overview

Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center (SIRC)

The Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center (SIRC) has been in operation since 2002 and its main focus is to assist patients affected by varying degrees of spinal and back injuries to return to as normal a life style as possible through physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counseling.

World famous for its spectacular mountainous terrain, Nepal’s vertical landscape is also responsible for a disproportionate number of spinal injuries. Porters slip from trails, women and children fall while collecting tree fodder or attending to livestock on precipitous slopes or cliff faces. With the new network of roads throughout the country and a high low education rate there is an increasingly high incidence of road traffic accidents as well.

The story of how the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center got its start: Kanak Mani Dixit, local Media Personality and Publisher injured his upper back due to a fall on a trek in the magical Annapurna trekking region of Nepal. Having experienced first-hand the lack of facilities, knowledge and support in the government hospitals in Kathmandu, after his recovery he and some friends got together and opened the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center at its current location. A bigger center outside Kathmandu is in the works.
