Overview

Siddhi Memorial Hospital for Women and Children

The Siddhi Memorial Hospital for Women and Children currently serves an average of 70 patients a day and its out-patient clinic facility on Saturday mornings serves a neighboring local community. The hospital seeks to redress the problem of a lack of medical facilities in Bhaktapur, a medieval city located 45 kilometers from the capital, Kathmandu. The aim is to provide free primary health care to the women and children of the area. Until the hospital was built in 1997, their closest facility had been a 30 minute drive by private car & for those using public buses, an agonizing 2 hours away.

The Hospital is a fifteen year long labor of love for Mr. and Mrs. Shyam Dhaubhadel. In 1993, their son Siddhi Sundar Dhaubhadel was tragically killed in a road accident in Bhaktapur. His life could have been saved had there been a medical facility in Bhaktapur. As it was, he died en-route while his parents rushed him to a hospital in Kathmandu. Following his death, Siddhi’s parents promptly set up a foundation in their son’s memory – Siddhi Memorial Health Service Center, later expanded to the current hospital site which was donated by the Dhaubhadels. Today it specializes in 5 areas: Health, Education, Old Age Home, Art-Culture and Sports. The overwhelming moral and financial support received from national and foreign individuals and organizations are still the main driving force behind the establishment and success of the SMF.
