Overview

Arya Tara School

Founded in 2000, the Arya Tara School is a sustainable, grassroots charity established by world renowned musician –Ani Choying Drolma, a Buddhist nun herself. The school provides free education and boarding facilities for Nepali girls from impoverished backgrounds. There are currently 57 enrolled students and the young girls aged between six and twenty three receive not only training in Buddhism but also secular education following the Nepali school curriculum. Upon completing the eighth grade, students graduate with a wide variety of skills (English, Math, Cooking, Organic Farming etc.) which should allow them to pursue different vocations, religious or secular.

The hope is that by providing a holistic education to these girls, they will be empowered to make a difference in their own lives and communities. The school is currently funded approximately 80% by Ani Choying’s concert tours and CD sales and 20% by charitable donations. New sustainable income generating projects are underway. The local area where the school is located is extremely beautiful and a visit to this facility can be combined with a day hike in the forest or a cultural tour of the villages nearby.
